Most dandruff is driven by an overgrowth of Malassezia, a yeast that lives naturally on the scalp. When it grows unchecked, it breaks down scalp oils into byproducts that irritate skin, speed up cell turnover, and cause the flaking, itching, and redness associated with dandruff and seborrheic dermatitis. Shampoos that only exfoliate or moisturize the scalp don't address this underlying imbalance — which is why so many dandruff products stop working over time.
Why I Formulated DandRX
I'm Dr. Deepak Khanna, a family medicine physician in Philadelphia. DandRX didn't start in a lab — it started in my exam room.
Week after week, patients brought up the same thing almost in passing, usually at the end of a visit for something else entirely: persistent flaking and an itchy, irritated scalp that never fully went away. Most had already tried two or three drugstore shampoos. Some worked for a few weeks and then stopped. Others left their scalp drier and more irritated than before they started.
When I looked closer at what was actually in those bottles, the pattern was clear. Many relied on the lowest effective dose of their active ingredient, and leaned on sulfates to clean the scalp — which strips away the natural oils that keep Malassezia yeast, the organism behind most dandruff, in check to begin with. Short-term results, long-term irritation.
That became the standard for DandRX: an active ingredient concentrated enough to make a real difference, delivered in a sulfate-free, barrier-safe base. Not the minimum needed to make a claim on the label — the formula I'd want a patient of mine actually using.

Why Our Shampoo Works Differently Than Your Typical Shampoo
Standard shampoos clean the scalp. They don't treat it. A medicated formula needs to do more — reach the fungus at the root, stay on the scalp long enough to work, and avoid stripping away the barrier it's trying to protect.
Active Concentration
Most drugstore anti-dandruff shampoos rely on the minimum effective concentration of their active ingredient. DandRX is formulated at 2% pyrithione zinc — double the strength typically found on the shelf — so more of the antifungal actually reaches the scalp with every wash.
Contact Time
An antifungal only works if it stays on the scalp long enough to act. DandRX's formula is built to cling to the scalp through the lather-and-rinse cycle rather than sheeting off immediately, giving the active ingredient time to work before it's washed away.
